Alexander (2004)

Summary: The story about the young boy, son of a king, that one day would come to rule the world of his time and enter the history as a legend, Megas Alexandros, Alexander the Great.

Alexander and Hephaestion
One of my favorites that I actually one had forgotten until I saw it on TV once more and again was captured by the story. It is hard to know what really happened but it is not like Oliver Stone wrote the story about Alexander himself, the story are over 2000 years old which is a long time to forget something some things and misinterpret others. The relationship between Alexander and Hephaestion is most likely one of the most legendary in the world and most believe that they were lovers, something not unusual for their time. Something that the movie captures beautifully, both in their dialogues with eachother but also in a letter from Olympias where she warns Alexander for every one of his closest friends, except Hephaestion.

Jared Leto as Hephaestion
It was a great scene between Alexander and Hephastion the night before the battel against the persians. Alexander mentions Patroclus and Achilles and Hephaestion mentions that Patroclus died first. To that Alexander answers that if that would happened Macedonia would lose its king as he would avenge him and the follow him in death. This awakens the question about their deaths. Was Hephastion murdered becouse of his influence on Alexander? And what about Alexander, was he murdered, did he die of broken heart or even committed suicide? After all, he did say that he would follow Hephaestion.

The movie also captures the pride and growing ego of Alexander as he conquers more and more land over the years, and how that in the end is the reason for his break down as he is reminded that he is mortal. They starts to understand that the world probably was far greater than they ever known and when they entered India everything started to go against them and they meet an enemy different from what they are used to.

I can go on and on about the phenomenon of Alexander presented in the movie. Alexander; the name itself has since his time been an reference to this Macedonian king. He became the icon of that name, much like the brittish Arthur or the roman Ceasar. I do not belive Alexander himself could have known just what impact he would have on the world and its future, but if he had, his ego would have been even more enormous.

"Megas Alexandros. The greatest Alexander of them all."
- Ptolemaios, the ending quote of the movie

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)

Summary: Percy Jakcson, a boy diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, discovers one day that he is the son of Posidon. What more, it is of the gods belief that he has stolen the lightning bolt beloning to Zeus (bad) and therefor his mother has been taken by Hades (very bad). So, he have to master his powers, save his mother AND find the lightning bolt.

Percy and co.

One of the most comical films I have ever seen but the ending was really bad and simpel compared to the complicated story. Seariusly, the demigods are trained to become soldiers, leaders and heroes of the world, by using ancient greek tecknickes. Sword, bow and arrows ... it has been over 2000 years! I do not think that modern soldiers are menat to use swords or anything like that.
I would hae liked it a bit more if the demigods trained more with their powers, if more demigods had been introduced and not just three (Percy counted) or if the gods had been living incognito in the modern world, like they meet up with Hades and he owned some sort of exclusive club (he did look like some sort of rocker) or they meet Zeuse and he was a big shot CEO in a big tower that was the modern Olympus.

Oh, my ... what happened with my hair?

On the other side, it is some fun when the old meets the new, like Medusa and an iphone, Karon and the modern american money or the flying sneakres and that the son of Hermes appears to be the one in the demigod camp with modern world tecknology. Another good thing was the referenses to the greek mythology, like Persephone asking her husband what he would do if she did not come by pointing out that she already was in hell.

Gods; no parenting classes for them

Not to say to much about the conclusion, but the real thief, like father like son (check up the father of the thief when you have seen the movie). That the children are similar to their parent is also seen in many scenes, for exampel all daughters of Afrodite are beautiful and the girl that Percy are interested in is the daughter to the goddess that his father in a way likes and is liked by. It also appears as if all the demi-gods has problem with their god-parent becouse of the rule that they may never meat thir half-blooded children. Seriously, gods can never raise demigods right.

Aurora Borealis

A faint but visible aurora appears over the sky! Last time it happened here was around 10 years ago. This time it was in a pale green colour (and it is still Saint Patrick’s Day) and more like a mist than a "snake like aurora" that is so widely famous. Sadly my camera cannot capture anything else than something that looks like a smudge on an otherwise black sky. I hope it does not take 10 years until next time...

Saint Patrick’s Day

The GREEN holiday that is celebrated mostly in US, UK, Canada and Irleand but also in other contries, it is also the Irish National Day. Originally the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue and Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock (below) to explain the Holy Trinity.

It is also much about tales about littel men with pots of gold and dressed in, guess what...  GREEN! I have not seen any of thoes today but I got the next best.

Some men that are GREEN...

Hulk (not little but green)
Yoda (little and green)
Mike Wazowski (in one way, little)
the Grinch (erhm... green)
Ninja Turtles (do I need to say anything?)

and some men that dress in GREEN

Loki (the cape, hello)
Robin Hood (the classic ones that is)
Green Lantern and Green Arrow (even their names)

and of course a lady in green

Morgana (green with envy?)
